James Sutman

H.O.P.E Honoree

Jimmy Sutman is a 1990 graduate of Poland Seminary High School who went on to earn his BA in Communication Arts from Grove City College and his MFA in Creative Writing from St. Leo University.  He is the owner and operator of Iron and String Life Enhancement, a company that provides residential, respite, advocacy, transportation and vocational services to individuals with disabilities.  He is also the Daily Director of Operations for Golden String, a non-profit that helps clients realize their fullest potential through community-based activities, recreation and socialization. Golden String currently includes Joe Gallagher’s lunch bucket, a community café that is operated by adults with disabilities; Golden String Radio, an internet-based radio station where clients serve as disc jockeys, and the up-and-coming Gabbacamp, a premier camp style resort in Coitsville.  Between ISLE and Golden String, Jimmy employs over 400 professionals and serves over 350 clients in the Mahoning Valley area.

Active in his community, Jimmy is a member of Catholic Charities, St. Columba Cathedral, the Hine Memorial Fund Board through the Youngstown Foundation and Lit Youngstown.  He also serves as the Secretary of the Youngstown Economic Action Group.   Jimmy enjoys leading a monthly prayer group, hosting a weekly radio show, and participating in several local bocce leagues. A published poet, he recently released Wormhole Conquistadors. When not working, Jimmy can be found tending to the land and animals on his farm and spending time with his furry and most loyal companion Phil.
